Agriculture Professional Practicum

Haoran Fan was a participant of the Agriculture Professional Practicum, in 2020. Haoran is a Bachelor of Agriculture student from The University of Melbourne.

Q: Why did you decide to undertake ACICIS’ Agriculture Professional Practicum?

Indonesia is developing fast these days. As I have not been to Indonesia before, I hope to have a chance to have a look at this country and understand its society.

The industry internship is a valuable experience for me, because it provides me a view of what would be like to enters the agriculture industry in Indonesia.

Q: How will the Agriculture Professional Practicum benefit or influence your future career?

This is my first internship. It would allow me to add some valuable information to my CV, which would bring me more opportunities in the future. At the same time, I have had working experiences, which could encourage me to work harder in my academic knowledges.

 Q: Which organisation did you intern with? What were your roles and responsibilities?

MSMB, an agriculture technology company.

My role is to train the AI by tagging photos of plant diseases, as the same time, I am observing and trying to improve the chili field of this company.

Q: How have you found the work culture of your host organisation? How is it different to work experience in Australia?

The work culture here is people would have a task to finish, and the contract is based on time people spent in the company. Employees are having more freedom in the working hours, which reduces the pressure of getting the job done.

I am unable to tell the difference between Indonesia and Australia, as I haven’t had an internship in Australia.

However, my experiences show that internships in Australia are mainly linked with university.

Q: Would you like to return to work in Indonesia again in future?

Yes, as the emerging high technology can be observed in Indonesia, the probability of corporation between different countries would increase. I think Australia, China and Indonesia would have more communication and trading in the future, which would allow me to work in Indonesia in the future.

Q: What do you like to do in your spare time in Indonesia?

I would like to travel around the city I live in. I would also participate in the celebration of festivals in local area.

Q: Favourite place to eat and favourite Indonesian food?

Meat ball with noodle soup.

Q: Favourite Indonesian word/phrase?

Saya baik-baik saja.

Q. What places in Indonesia have you visited during your practicum so far?

Borobudur, mountain bromo, many temples and China town in Yogyakarta; botanic garden and many museums in Bogor.
